Battle in the Burgh 5
We went to Battle in the Burgh 5 recently. This is the last event for the current version of Exposure, and was also the first event for the brand new version of Photon.
Exposure
Exposure's first fight was against new robot Shark Bait. I was deliberately holding back a bit at the start, but then I got a good engagement into Shark Bait's PETG (I think) chassis which shattered, giving me a nice first win of the event.
My second fight was against another newcomer, Sunstroke, a dual horizontal spinner. I started the fight with a box rush, hitting Sunstroke and unplugging its battery with the force of the hit. The whole fight last just under 3 seconds, with no damage at all to Exposure.
My final Fight Night fight was against a spinnerless Sweet Tooth. Unfortunately, I think the force of the hit in the last fight slightly misaligned some things in the weapon motor assembly, so when I somehow ended up inverted, the weapon died which caused my first loss of the day.
Onto the Round of 16 then, where I fought Sweet 'n' Psycho. We were still having weapon issues at this point, so it was 50/50 if the weapon would work in this fight (it didn't). Sweet 'n' Psycho ended up stuck upside down, while I had caught on something on the arena floor which meant I was barely moving. However, I was moving enough to get the win and move on to the Round of 8.
Going into this fight I was not at all confident. The weapon was definitely not going to work, and I was fighting previous event winner Jumbo Shrimp. I managed to do a bit of pushing before getting a fork stuck in the pit seam and being counted out of the competition. Even though I was having weapon issues, I somehow managed to get a personal record for the furthest point reached in a tournament, so it was quite a good result overall.
Photon
Photon had received more than a few upgrades since the last event, it's mostly new with big expectations.
The first fight was against not one, but four(!) robots - a cluster bot called Cluster Fudge. A good strike with the hammer saw smashed one of the cluster bots in style. The annoyingly good little brown one drove into the pit leaving just 2 (50%) of the cluster active. with 33% of the cluster (or more) still active, they were winning until they were both helped in the pit just *after* time ran out. It went to the judges with Photon loosing on a split judges decision. Harsh, but the judges decision is final.
Fight no. 2 saw Photon facing Angel Slice We took the strategic decision to remote the weapon arm is it was very vulnerable to the horizontal blade - and we didn't have any spares! Photon survived multiple hits well and nearly pushed Angel Slice into the pit. A bit of poor driving later and it was Photon in the pit.
In the 3rd fight Photon got some very good hits on Nezumi including one which took one of their front fork mount off cleanly. Unfortunately Photon got stuck on the edge of the pit, and with a little help from Nezumi who firstly open the pit and then gave a little push, Photon was back at the bottom of the pit.
The next fight was a 4 way team whiteboard with Shark Bait After surviving multiple hits from Baby Dead Bod, one final hit sent Photon across the arena, bouncing off the wall, never to move again in this fight.
Photon will be back with upgraded brushless drive for Rapture, Colchester in August.
