We went down to York for our first event of the year last weekend. This was the first event for my new antweight, Isotope. It uses a lot of the parts that Fallout (now retired) used, and is a 2WD vertical spinner.
Exposure
Exposure went into the event mostly unchanged from Burgh. It had a new, slightly lighter chassis but was otherwise identical. The first fight was a rematch of last Dojo's final against Shuv-it 2. Unfortunately, the weapon belt problems returned for no real reason, so the weapon was dead and the fight became a driving battle. Due to the design of Exposure, it is very fast in a straight line but the weapon normally slows the turning down. However due to the lack of weapon, it was very twitchy and hard to drive and I ended up being pitted.
The second fight against Sweg Demon and the third (another rematch) against Bash were similary disappointing. We forfeited the final due to having issues with the drive motors that all decided to happen at the same time.
Repulsion
Repulsion was back at Dojo after meeting Dissector last time with a new lid and repaired Malenki.
Not a great start though with a loss against Mamba. Drive troubles meant straight lines were impossible and the fight ended quickly with Repulsion in the pit.
Fight no.2 was against Mini Hydra. Despite trying to position the lifting arms under Mini Hydra, I was flipped multiple times. The final flip put Repulsion right on the end of the pit, a position I couldn't recover from.
Next up was Binala, a scary looking horizontal spinner. I decided to charge in quickly before the Binala's spinner was up to speed which caused it ricochet around the arena and gyro beautifully. A few more charges from Repulsion caused the dreaded spinner to stop. When Binala got stuck on the edge of the pit, all it took was a carefully lined up flip from Repulsion for its first win on the day!
The final fight was against Stormchaser, a terrifying vertical spinner. A false start by Stormchaser caused Repulsion damage before the fight officially began, nothing I couldn't patch up again quickly before the fight - nearly! Repulsion went in with great caution then the fight started properly, looking for an opportunity to flip the opponent from the side. Unfortunately the weapon of Stormchaser made contact, destroyed Repulsion's weapon and ejected the LiPo battery into the pit. Thanks to Dave for quickly removing the damaged LiPo from the arena and the building.
Isotope
The first competition fight for this robot was against Ash, a pusher. From the start we interlocked forks, and I was unable to break free and was pitted. However, I did manage to do a good amount of damage to his top plate!
Second I had to fight Dissector. I was obviously very nervous for this given what happened to Repulsion at the last event, but it went pretty well. I got some nice hits, before bouncing off the floor causing my switch to physically turn off. Not a bad outcome!
Baby Boomer was my next opponent. Unknown to me, a drive motor had completely died before this fight, so my attempt to drive forwards resulted in getting the perfect angle to launch him into the pit in 2.3 seconds!
Isotope's final fight was against Order Up. This was the performance I'd been wanting all event. I got good hits, did some damage, and ended up with a pitting.
Overall this was a bit of a disappointing event, but we have a lot to work on (including a new robot) for BBB Beetle Brawl in February.
